Those who live in Tseung Kwan O know very well that Tseung Kwan O station is basically consisted of several shopping malls. For dinner, of course one can choose the restaurants or food courts inside these shopping malls, although sadly, they are those chain restaurants you can find in pretty much all other areas in HK. However, walking one more block away there is another choice.

"Wei Sic Pei" (apparently this local restaurant has no English name) serves both local dishes and hotpot. In fact you can see seafood waiting to be picked just near the entrance. The restaurant is quite large and understandably, not very clean. But I am never deterred by hygiene conditions. This restaurant has the capacity to serve a large group of people with hotpot or just some dishes for 2 people. On the night of my visit, I could see a huge table enjoying hotpot while a family of 4 was eating dinner right next to me. For large group, it's better to reserve a table first.

You may get a feeling of what this restaurant is about from few pages of the menu.

We only ordered a few dishes, including a set for "Grouper in Two Ways" ($248).

Fried Group with Greens - The first grouper dish in the set, greens being broccoli. The broccoli looked fresh. The amount of grouper 'balls' was ok and they were not overcooked with the right texture. Broccoli was fried well and not soggy at all.

Steamed Grouper Bone in Diced Garlic - The other dish in the grouper set. Garlic and seafood always work well with each another, no matter by frying or steaming. As it was the 'bone' of the grouper, one could not expect there was lots of flesh. The bone here was steamed well and quite tasty with the garlic, and the garlic was not overpowering the taste of the fish. However, it was too oily and looked a bit scary.

Seafood Claypot - The seafood claypot looked good, didn't it? It was due to the contrasting and sharp colour of the vegetables, which were of course fresh. But... I found the amount of veggies to be a bit too much and where was the seafood??? Anyway, there were some seafood hidden underneath the veggies like shrimp, scallops or squid. The sauce was orange-red but it tasted kind of blank, probably because too little of it was added. It didn't really matter since the seafood themselves were fresh and no heavy seasoning was needed.

Pan-fried Eggs with Preserved Radish - This was definitely the highlight of the night! The omelette was cut in wedges with a truly golden look. The spring onion added more flavour to the eggs. The preserved radish was a bit salty while the egg was soft and creamy. It was really good. One must understand that egg is one of the most difficult food to prepare, especially for this kind of family dish. I hope this is the usual fried egg standard in this restaurant.

Amaranth with Salted duck egg and Century egg - This looked quite scary since there was just too much 'soup' which looked like it was going to spill. But it actually tasted quite okay. The amaranth was fresh and it was not oily at all. A healthy end to the night.

A simple and tasty dinner. Next time I will know where to go in Tseung Kwan O.
