作為行山新手及愛好者,週末及公眾價期必要"通山走"的。這天由陽明山莊行去赤柱,經典路線。但途中有一條頗長的樓梯,我的友人們走得好不辛苦。在高處看去赤柱是這樣的:
As a newcomer and fan of hiking, what's better than spending weekends or public holidays hiking up and down the beautiful countryside of Hong Kong? This week was a hike to Stanley following the classic route with the following view:
行罷我的朋友已是累到一個不行,而且又既然來到赤柱,無論如何也要吃一頓。在海旁行了一會便在Pickled Pelican停下。餐廳分上下兩層,我們坐在上層,聽得到外面有人唱live。我們都頗為肚餓,所以很快就點好食物。
Right after the hike my friends were exhausted. Well, we were in Stanley! We couldn't just leave without enjoying a meal here. We wandered around the beach then stopped at Pickled Pelican. We sat on the second floor, listening to live music performance outside. We were pretty hungry so we ordered quickly.
古巴三文治 Cuban Sandwich ($138) - 先來一份三文治,伴碟的是薯條。古巴三文治可不是來自古巴,而是早期移民到美國佛羅里達州不同城市的古巴人。一般來說古巴三文治的材料有火腿、芝士、芥末醬、醃黃瓜及燒豬肉,及用上古巴式麵包。Pickled Pelican的古巴三文治都是由這數款材料組成,在相中也可以見到不同材料很分明的放在麵包中間。麵包烘烤得非常脆而不太韌,很好吃!旁邊的薯條是連皮的,炸的比金黃色更深色,但沒有燶味,香脆惹味,好吃得很。
The first dish was Cuban Sandwich, with fries on the side. Cuban Sandwich is not from Cuba, but from immigrant cities in Florida with Cuban communities. Generally, the sandwich consists of ham, Swiss cheese, mustard, pickles and roasted pork with Cuban bread and these were the ingredients used by Pickled Pelican here. You can see the different ingredients in between the bread in the picture, marked by their respective contrasting colours. The sandwich was extremely crispy without being too hard to chew and it was delicious! The fries were in 'deep' golden colour but there was no burnt taste at all.
Second dish was the fish and chips, which every table had one. It seems that in Hong Kong, fish and chips is not typically served with mushy peas/peas, which is common elsewhere. Same situation applies to vinegar but Pickled Pelican provides vinegar. Another sauce was the tartar sauce, which is mayonnaise mixed with other ingredients. There were 3 pieces of fish fillet. The batter was not particularly thin but it stuck to the fish fillet so there was no "bubble" or "room" between the layer of batter and the fish. The fish tasted normal with lemon juice and was not too dry. I prefer tartar sauce to vinegar though.
水蜜桃撻伴乾果鳥結及白朱古力汁 Peach Tart ($62) - 中文名字超長。。。但沒有提到有雪糕,哈哈。賣相非常漂亮,乾果鳥結糖是放在碟的另一邊。由於撻上有一大球的雪糕,反而沒有太吃到白朱古力汁的味道。撻是溫暖的,和雪糕吃一冷一熱口感豐富。水蜜桃撻焗得香脆,底部不會太實。是一客好看又好吃的甜品。不過不太明白為何會有乾果鳥結糖,它們被放在一旁,與水蜜桃撻好像沒有關係。
Wow this Peach Tart did look pretty. There were dried fruits nougat on the side. As there was ice cream on the tart, I couldn't really taste the white chocolate sauce which was listed on menu. The tart was warm and was good with the ice cream. Their flavours played off each other. The bottom was not rock-hard, which just made me like it more~ What I couldn't understand was the role of the nougat. It just stood next to the tart with interfering with the tart at all.
蘋果金寶批伴脆蛋白馬令及雲喱拿雪糕 Apple Crumble ($58) - 又是另一客賣相非常討好的甜品。看到已先入為主覺得好吃。金寶批其實不真的是一個批,是散開的。上面有一大球雲喱拿雪糕,再放了一片很漂亮的青蘋果切片。其實apple crumble除了可以伴雪糕外,還可以伴custard的,不過好像多數都是伴以雪糕。金寶碎的部分很脆,混合微甜的蘋果肉很好吃,即使不要雪糕也可以。
Another dessert that looked like you were in a 5-star hotel. It just looked so good that you were immediately certain it would taste good as soon as you saw it. This dish was called an "Apple Crumble Pie" in Chinese although it's not a pie at all. There was a huge scoop of ice cream on the crumble, topped with a beautifully sliced apple. One thing that got me wondering is that apple crumble can also be served with custard but I guess the norm in Hong Kong is ice cream. The crisps were definitely crunchy. The diced apples were lightly sweetened. The crumble was great itself without the ice cream. A deeply satisfying dessert indeed.
先來了兩份熱氣非常的主食再來兩個甜品,幸好甜品不太膩亦不太甜。行完山的路程以美食作結亦是一件美事。
After the two not-so-healthy main dishes, it was great to see two not-too-sweet desserts. They put a great end to a hiking day.
